Snæfellsnes Peninsula

A glacier-volcano immortalised by Jules Verne, the country's most photographed mountain and cliffs full of seabirds: "Iceland in miniature" fits into a 200 km loop.

Suggested stay1 to 2 nights

Two hours north of Reykjavík, Snæfellsnes unrolls in one day what the Ring Road spreads over a thousand kilometres: mossy lava fields, black beaches (Djúpalónssandur and the remains of its wrecked trawler), the basalt cliffs of Arnarstapi linked to Hellnar by a superb coastal path, fishing villages (Stykkishólmur) and, at the tip, Snæfellsjökull — the glacier-capped volcano through which Jules Verne sent his heroes to the centre of the Earth.

Kirkjufell, the "church mountain" facing its waterfall, has become Iceland's most photographed image. The peninsula works as a long day trip from the capital, but one night on site (Grundarfjörður, Arnarstapi) does it justice — and slots it naturally between Reykjavík and the Westfjords or the North.

Don't miss

  • Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss (the classic frame is earned early in the morning)
  • The Arnarstapi–Hellnar coastal path between arches and tern colonies
  • Djúpalónssandur beach and its sailors' lifting stones
  • The Snæfellsjökull circuit on road 574, the glacier as a permanent backdrop

Our tips on the ground

  • Loop clockwise from the south: the sites line up with the sun behind you.
  • Peninsula weather turns fast: save Kirkjufell for a clear window — in drizzle the mountain loses all its magic.
  • In summer the Arctic terns dive-bomb near their nests: walk with a raised stick or hood, and laugh about it.

Readers' questions about Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Does Snæfellsnes replace the Ring Road on 4-5 days?

That is exactly its role: Golden Circle + south coast to Vík + Snæfellsnes make Iceland's best short programme, without a single dull connecting day. The full Ring Road demands 8 days minimum — under that it becomes a frustrating marathon.

Can you climb Snæfellsjökull?

Only on a guided trip (snowmobile or glacier hike depending on season) from Arnarstapi: it is a crevassed glacier, not a hill. In clear weather the summit sees all the way to Reykjavík — and in any weather, the drive around its base is already worth the journey.
