Guanacaste and Nicoya
The guaranteed-sun coast: blond coves, surf spots for every level and coastal tracks where the 4x4 finally earns its keep — the circuit's seaside reward.
Suggested stay — 3 to 4 nights
The Pacific north-west is tico California: beaches in a string (lively Tamarindo, family Sámara, bohemian Santa Teresa at the end of Nicoya's tracks), dry forest flaming in season, razor-sharp sunsets. This is where you drop the bags for three days at the trip's end — surf in the morning, hammock in the afternoon, ceviche at sundown.
Two wild gems lift the picture: the Ostional refuge, where olive ridley turtles land by the tens of thousands in arribadas (mass synchronised nestings, mostly August to November), and southern Nicoya's tracks, fords included, which keep Santa Teresa and Montezuma at the end of an effort — the filter that makes their charm.
Don't miss
- Santa Teresa and Montezuma (and its waterfall) at the peninsula's end
- An arribada at Ostional if the dates align — check the local calendar
- Sámara and Carrillo for the family version and calm swimming
- The Las Baulas marine park at Tamarindo: mangrove by boat and leatherbacks (Nov-Feb)
Our tips on the ground
- Southern Nicoya (Santa Teresa) is earned: tracks, dust and fords — the Puntarenas–Paquera ferry pleasantly shortens the approach from the centre.
- In the green season, wade every ford on foot and turn back without shame: the tide and yesterday's downpour change everything.
- NEVER leave anything in the car at beach car parks: the country's one real security black spot.

Readers' questions about Guanacaste and Nicoya
Which beach should be the base?
By mood: Tamarindo for buzz and surf schools, Sámara for families (a protected bay), Santa Teresa for the surf-yoga-sunset combo at the end of the track, Nosara for the smart-nature version. All share the essentials: a warm Pacific and perfect sunsets.
Is Guanacaste worth it in the green season?
Yes — it's even the safest region in uncertain weather: the north-west coast stays the country's driest, showers pass quicker than elsewhere and the regreened forest is superb. One vigilance: southern Nicoya's tracks and fords, approached with humility after heavy rain.
