Glencoe and Glen Etive

A glacial valley pinched between dark walls, loaded with tragic history: Glencoe is the concentrate of Highlands that the A82 crosses through its heart.

Suggested stay1 to 2 nights

Coming from the south, the A82 crosses the desolate plateau of Rannoch Moor then plunges between Glencoe's Three Sisters: one of Britain's finest roads, and one of its most charged — the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald clan still haunts the glen, told very well at the visitor centre.

The essential detour: the little Glen Etive road (made famous by Skyfall), 20 km of single track down to the loch, deer all but guaranteed in the evening. On foot, the range runs from the Signal Rock stroll to the Lost Valley (2-3 h, bouldery), historic hiding place of the MacDonalds' rustled cattle.

Don't miss

  • The Three Sisters viewpoint and the A82 defile
  • Glen Etive at sunset, to the loch at the road's end
  • The Lost Valley walk (Coire Gabhail)
  • Glencoe village and its memorial, with the folk museum

Our tips on the ground

  • Drive the glen early morning or late day: raking light makes everything, and the Three Sisters car parks saturate by noon.
  • In Glen Etive use the passing places religiously and take your litter home: the road has suffered from its fame.
  • Practical bases: Glencoe village or Ballachulish; Fort William, 20 minutes away, covers everything (and serves as base camp for Ben Nevis).

Readers' questions about Glencoe and Glen Etive

Can you hike Glencoe without experience?

Yes, choosing well: the loch an Achtriochtan path or Signal Rock are family strolls; the Lost Valley needs good boots and sure feet on the boulders; the ridges (Aonach Eagach…) are mountaineering. Scottish weather rules: under a low ceiling, stay on the valley floor — it is superb too.

Glencoe or the Skye road, if you must pick one axis?

They combine naturally: Glasgow → Loch Lomond → Glencoe → Fort William → Glenfinnan → Skye is THE spine of the classic 7-10 day Scottish road trip. Glencoe isn't a detour — it's the way through.
