Drakensberg

A 3,000-metre basalt wall raised above the Zulu grasslands: South Africa's hiking paradise, between two blocks of safari and ocean.

Suggested stay2 to 3 nights

The "Dragon Mountains" form the natural border with Lesotho: black cliffs, immense cirques, protea-studded grasslands and one of the continent's richest ensembles of San rock paintings. The royal sector (Royal Natal) and its Amphitheatre — 5 km of unbroken wall — hold the most famous images.

You come to walk: from family strolls to waterfalls up to alpine routes (Tugela Falls, among the world's highest, via the Sentinel Peak chain ladders). Two to three nights in the mountain lodges and camps pleasantly break the road between Kruger and the coast.

Don't miss

  • The Amphitheatre from the Tugela Gorge trail (Royal Natal), the signature hike
  • The plateau ascent via Sentinel Peak and its chain ladders (vertiginous, unforgettable)
  • The San paintings of Main Caves (Giant's Castle) or Kamberg
  • The Sani Pass into Lesotho, a mythic 4x4-only col

Our tips on the ground

  • Mountain weather turns fast: violent summer storms (start early), frost and snow possible in winter.
  • The Sani Pass requires a real 4x4 and a passport (you enter Lesotho): check your rental contract allows it.
  • Distances deceive: the Drakensberg valleys don't interconnect through the mountains — each sector has its own access from the N3.

Readers' questions about Drakensberg

Which Drakensberg sector should you choose?

For a first visit: Royal Natal in the north, for the Amphitheatre and well-marked trails. Giant's Castle for the San paintings and bearded vultures; the south (Underberg) for the Sani Pass. Choose ONE sector per two-to-three-night stay — the connections are long.

Can you hike without a guide?

Yes on the parks' marked trails (sign the mountain register at the start). A guide is worthwhile for summit-plateau routes, protected rock-art sites, and for safety in doubtful weather.
