Golden Circle
The rift between two continents, a geyser erupting every eight minutes and a double-drop waterfall: the classic warm-up — taken against the coach timetable.
Suggested stay — 1 day (1 night in the area)
The Golden Circle lines up the country's three most-visited sites within two hours of Reykjavík: Þingvellir national park, where you literally walk in the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates (and where the world's first parliament sat, in 930); the Geysir geothermal field, whose Strokkur jets 20 metres every five to ten minutes; and Gullfoss, the "golden falls" collapsing in two tiers into a canyon.
The whole game is dodging the excursion tide: drive the loop early morning or after 5 pm, in the opposite direction to the coaches (Gullfoss first), and extend with the side dishes that often outshine the mains — the Kerið crater, the secret Brúarfoss falls, the Friðheimar tomato greenhouses.
Don't miss
- The Almannagjá rift at Þingvellir, and the Silfra snorkel for the bold
- Strokkur — stay for three eruptions; the third is always the photo
- Gullfoss from the lower path, spray guaranteed
- The Kerið crater and its turquoise lake, as a bonus on the southern road
Our tips on the ground
- Sleep in the Circle area (Laugarvatn, Flúðir) rather than Reykjavík: sites at dawn to yourself, local pools in the evening (Secret Lagoon, Fontana).
- Anti-coach direction: Gullfoss → Geysir → Þingvellir in the afternoon, or everything very early.
- It's the perfect first rental day: easy roads, short distances, a gentle shakedown.

Readers' questions about Golden Circle
Is the Golden Circle overrated?
No — it is over-visited, which is different. Þingvellir at 8 am, alone in the rift, remains a considerable moment. The rule: shifted hours, one night in the area, and treating the Circle as a starter — the south coast serves the main course.
Can you do it in winter?
Yes — it's even one of the safest winter loops: priority snow-clearing, short distances, and a half-frozen Gullfoss is worth the trip alone. Just check conditions every morning and carry light crampons for icy paths.
