What it is for, who it suits
On a self-drive trip the phone becomes the GPS: offline maps, fuel stops, the way to the lodge. It has to stay readable without being held or left on the passenger seat, where it slides off at the first bend on gravel.
This mount attaches to the dashboard with a sticky gel suction cup. The lever has two positions: one for smooth surfaces, the other for curved or textured plastic, common on rental 4x4s and pick-ups. When the gel gets dusty, a rinse in warm water and air drying restore its grip. The telescopic arm brings the screen closer (about 18 to 23 cm), the ball joint turns 360° for portrait or landscape, and the cradle holds the phone even in its case.
Limits: on corrugated roads, vibration eventually loosens any suction cup, so check it every morning. Keep it clear of airbag zones and of your view of the road. It does not charge the phone.

Will it hold on a textured dashboard?
That is what the gel and the lever's second position are for. Clean the surface first; on very rough plastic, the windscreen is an alternative.
