Budget & Prep Kit · Oman

Your Oman budget, costed in 20 minutes

A spreadsheet that already knows Omani prices (4x4, fuel, camps, guesthouses, outings), a checklist that forgets neither the tyre gauge nor the strap sandals, and a day-by-day itinerary template with a water, fuel and wadi-timing column: the three tools that turn “around €3,000?” into a precise budget.

The kit's labels are in French — figures and formulas are universal.

1.The OMR/EUR budget spreadsheet

Nineteen lines pre-filled with the guide's prices (flights, real 4x4 and excess waiver, fuel per kilometre, guesthouses, Wahiba camp, Misfat heritage house, Muscat hotel, wild camping, gear bought locally, food, Ras al Jinz turtles, forts, Wadi Shab boat, camp escort, SIM, contingency). Live formulas in the Excel version: change “2 travellers, 12 days” to “4 travellers, 16 days” and everything recalculates, in rials and euros.

2.The Oman-specific gear checklist

Six categories, from paperwork to health, with what really matters in Oman: a credit card for the deposit, tyre gauge and sand boards, water jerrycans, a stove bought locally (never in the hold), strap sandals for the wadis, covering clothes, a down jacket for the jebels in winter, a dry bag. Tickable, printable.

3.The day-by-day itinerary template

16 rows ready to fill in: stops, kilometres, driving time, accommodation (hotel, camp or wild camping), price, booked or not, activities — plus a “water, fuel, wadi timing” column, the three things that decide everything. Three worked example rows to start on the right foot.

Readers' questions

How does the budget spreadsheet work?

You enter three parameters — number of travellers, number of days, OMR/EUR rate — and the nineteen lines recalculate: flights, 4x4 and excess waiver, fuel per kilometre, guesthouses, desert camp, heritage house, hotel, wild camping, gear, food, outings and entry fees, SIM card, contingency. Each line shows its total in Omani rials and in euros, with the final cost per person and per day.

What formats do the files come in?

The spreadsheet comes in two versions: Excel (.xlsx, with live formulas — works in Excel, LibreOffice, Numbers, Google Sheets) and a pre-calculated CSV. The checklist and itinerary template come as Markdown and CSV. Note: the kit's labels are in French — the figures and formulas are universal.

Where do the pre-filled prices come from?

From the “balanced” profile in chapter 9 of the “Oman on Your Own” guide: a real 4x4 with excess waiver, M91 petrol at about 0.229 OMR per litre, nights split between guesthouses, a desert camp, a heritage house, a Muscat hotel and wild camping, meals mostly in local cafeterias. They are starting points: replace them with your own quotes — that's what it's built for.

Is the kit included in the complete Oman Bundle?

Yes. The €59 Oman Bundle includes the “Oman on Your Own” guide and this kit. If you don't have the guide yet, the bundle is the simplest option: the guide explains the trade-offs, the kit puts numbers on them.
