Southern Namibia (ǁKaras) · Stop 06

Fish River Canyon

A canyon 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and 550 m deep — one of Africa's largest. The Namibian south in its raw state: mineral, silent, crushed by light.

Carved by the Fish River through some of the continent's oldest rock, the canyon is discovered from a series of rim viewpoints around the Hobas camp. Below, the river only truly flows after the rains; the rest of the year it shrinks to a chain of green pools.

It is a contemplative stop: you come for two or three hours of viewpoints at sunset or sunrise, not for a packed visit. Its position makes it the natural pivot of an 18-21 day itinerary that dives south before climbing back towards Lüderitz and Sossusvlei.

Hikers know the canyon for its mythic 85 km trek (4-5 days, mid-April to mid-September only, booked with a medical certificate) — off-topic for a classic self-drive, but the place's reputation comes from it.

What to see and do

1.The Main Viewpoint

A dozen kilometres from Hobas, facing the great horseshoe bend: THE canyon view. The setting sun sets the eastern wall ablaze — plan to be there a good hour early, folding chair and cold drink in hand.

2.Hiker's Viewpoint and the secondary lookouts

A small track follows the plateau rim to other belvederes, including the trek's starting point. Less visited, they offer different angles on the meanders. Stay well back from the edge: no barriers, friable rock.

3.Ai-Ais and its hot springs

At the canyon's southern outlet, the thermal resort of Ai-Ais ("burning" in Nama) offers pools fed by 60 °C springs, camping and rooms. Astonishing relaxation after days of gravel — especially on cold winter nights.

4.The Quivertree Forest and Giant's Playground

Near Keetmanshoop, 2 h 30 north-east, a "forest" of quiver trees and a chaos of stacked dolerite blocks. Perfect at sunset, as a connecting stop between the Kalahari and the canyon.

Where to stay

By category — the guide covers how to choose and when to book.

Hobas campsite and NWR camp

The closest to the viewpoints (10 km): shaded campsite, pool, small shop. The logical choice for sunset and sunrise over the canyon.

Ai-Ais (NWR)

Rooms and camping around the hot springs, at the canyon's floor level, about 70 km by road from the main viewpoints. You sleep here for the thermal atmosphere more than the logistics.

Plateau lodges and guest farms

Around the C37 and towards the Canyon Roadhouse, several characterful lodges and private campsites (€80-200). A good comfort/proximity compromise, with fuel nearby.

Driving advice

  • The sector must be earned: long straight gravel runs (C37, C12), sometimes heavily corrugated. Check pressures and keep to 80 km/h maximum.
  • Fill up at Keetmanshoop, the Canyon Roadhouse or Ai-Ais: distances between stations often exceed 150 km.
  • No barriers at the viewpoints: hold children's hands and keep away from the edge in strong wind.
  • In summer, carry 5 litres of water per person in the vehicle: a breakdown here can mean hours of waiting in the sun.

Before you go

Readers' questions about Fish River Canyon

Can you go down into the canyon?

Not freely: the descent is reserved for hikers registered on the multi-day trek (mid-April to mid-September, booking and medical certificate required) for safety and heat reasons. Day visitors enjoy the rim viewpoints — more than equal to the occasion.

Is the detour worth it on a 15-day circuit?

On 15 days it's the great southern dilemma: the canyon adds about 900 km round-trip from the Windhoek–Sossusvlei axis. It fully justifies itself on 18-21 days, paired with Lüderitz and Kolmanskop. On 15 days it's often better saved for a next trip — our guide details both options.

When is the light most beautiful?

In the very late afternoon: the sun drops into the canyon's axis and sets the walls ablaze. Sunrise is superb too, with the canyon in blue shadow and then the light pouring into the meanders. Midday, flat and shapeless, almost always disappoints.

Is there water in the canyon?

Rarely as a continuous flow. The Fish River only truly runs after the big summer rains (January-March); the rest of the year permanent pools remain, where baboons, oryx and discreet leopards come to drink. The Hardap dam upstream near Mariental regulates part of the flow.
