What it is for, who it suits
When the GPS goes quiet. In Kaokoland, the Kalahari or on an Icelandic track, phones overheat, lose signal or die. Facing an unsigned three-way split, simply knowing where north is saves an hour in the wrong direction with fuel dropping.
What it changes. A heading always in view, no battery, to cross-check with a paper map or Tracks4Africa notes.
