What it is for, who it suits
On foot. Deadvlei's dead trees are over a kilometre of sand from the car park, the Fish River Canyon viewpoint is a walk, and Waterberg hikes take the morning. Carrying the cool box, water and jackets by hand means giving up halfway or leaving without enough water.
What it changes. Lunch, water and the day's kit on your back, hands free for camera and binoculars.
