SIM Cards and Internet in Botswana: Staying Connected (and Knowing Where You Won’t Be)

In Botswana, mobile coverage follows one simple rule: it exists where there's tarmac and people, and disappears the moment you enter a national park or reserve. That's a real difference from neighbouring Namibia, where tracks at least pass through farms and villages: here, the Okavango Delta, Moremi, Savuti and the Central Kalahari are meant to stay wild, and that means unconnected. Here's how to get set up — carrier, SIM card or eSIM, how much data — and, more importantly, how to plan for when the signal simply stops, which happens fast and lasts for days at a stretch on the northern loop.
Mascom, Orange Botswana, BTC Mobile: three carriers, one easy call
Botswana has three mobile carriers: Mascom Wireless, Orange Botswana and BTC Mobile (the mobile arm of the state-owned incumbent, formerly beMobile). All three sell prepaid SIM cards to visitors, but Mascom, the market leader, has the widest network outside the main towns — a factor that matters far more for a road trip than urban coverage, which is already solid across the board.
Orange Botswana is a solid alternative, with comparable coverage on the main routes (Gaborone-Francistown-Kasane, Maun-Nata) but a somewhat thinner network once you leave the tar. BTC Mobile, the state-owned incumbent, is the third option, geared more toward the local market than passing visitors.

Physical SIM on arrival or eSIM before you leave
Buying a prepaid SIM on the ground is straightforward: Mascom and Orange shops operate at Gaborone's Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, as well as agencies and kiosks in Maun and Kasane, the two logistical gateways to the touristy north. On the road, coverage broadly tracks the tar: the Nata-Kasane link, the Maun-Nata road, and the paved stretches around Gaborone stay connected almost continuously. The delta, Moremi, Savuti, the Central Kalahari: off-grid, full stop

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) takes it furthest: several days of complete self-sufficiency, with no phone network of any kind, where the only reliable safety net is the route plan left with someone before setting off. Even Chobe, despite Kasane sitting right next door, loses signal entirely once you move away from the riverfront into the park's interior.
