Grand Canyon

A gash 450 km long and 1,600 m deep where the Colorado has sliced through two billion years of rock: no photograph prepares you for the moment the ground opens.

The Grand Canyon seen from the South Rim, red and ochre strata under a deep blue sky
Pl. USAThe Grand Canyon from the South Rim — two billion years laid open to the sky.

The South Rim concentrates the essentials: open year-round, it lines up its viewpoints along Desert View Drive (40 km, Mary Colter's Watchtower as the finale) and the Rim Trail, served by free shuttles. Mather Point absorbs the sunrise crowds; Hopi Point and Lipan Point offer the widest sunsets over the river. The North Rim, 300 m higher and 350 km away by road, receives ten times fewer visitors — but closes from December to mid-May.

The real encounter happens below the rim: descending an hour or two on Bright Angel or South Kaibab changes everything — the silence rises, the strata scroll past, squirrels give way to condors. The golden rule posted everywhere: going down is optional, coming back up is mandatory, and reaching the river in a day is a classic search-and-rescue trap. Ooh Aah Point (South Kaibab, 1.5 h round trip) is the park's best effort-to-reward ratio.

Don't miss

  • Sunrise at Mather or Yaki Point, before the coaches
  • The descent to Ooh Aah Point via South Kaibab, or to Havasupai Gardens via Bright Angel for solid calves
  • Desert View Drive and Mary Colter's Watchtower at day's end
  • The California condors soaring below the rim, often near the Bright Angel Trailhead

Our tips on the ground

  • Sleep inside the park or in Tusayan: sunrise and sunset are the whole show, and Flagstaff is a 1.5-hour drive away.
  • Below the rim, allow twice your descent time to climb back and carry more water than instinct suggests: the canyon gains 10 °C on the way down.
  • Book Mather campground or the rim lodges on recreation.gov the moment slots open (6 months ahead): in summer, everything goes in minutes.

Readers' questions about Grand Canyon

South Rim or North Rim?

The South Rim for a first trip: open year-round, the major viewpoints, full services and itinerary logic with Page and Monument Valley. The North Rim (mid-May to November only) rewards second visits: aspen forest, high-altitude coolness and relative solitude. The two rims face each other 16 km apart as the condor flies — and 350 km by road.

Can you hike down to the Colorado in a day?

The NPS formally advises against it and rangers stop summer attempts: 1,600 m of elevation, rising heat and 10-12 hours of effort make it the park's leading cause of evacuations. The right version: sleeping at Phantom Ranch or Bright Angel campground — but places are allocated by lottery months in advance. Otherwise, a partial descent already delivers most of the magic.
