Vicentine Coast

A hundred kilometres of golden cliffs and buildings-free beaches, a fishermen's path along the void and the lighthouse at Europe's corner: the west coast remains Portugal's finest victory over concrete.

Suggested stay2 to 4 nights

Protected by a natural park, the south-west coast — Porto Covo to Sagres — escaped the Algarve's urbanisation: beaches set between cliffs (Odeceixe and its river, Amoreira, surfers' Arrifana, immense Bordeira), villages kept simple (Vila Nova de Milfontes, Zambujeira, Aljezur) and the famous Fishermen's Trail (Rota Vicentina) running along the cliff edge among storks nesting on the sea stacks.

The finale is grandiose: Sagres and its fortress on the plateau, then Cape St Vincent, Europe's south-western corner, where the lighthouse crowns 60 metres of cliff above applauded sunsets. This is the kingdom of vans and surf guesthouses — two to four nights, by appetite for ocean.

Don't miss

  • Odeceixe beach, half river half ocean (and its viewpoint)
  • A leg of the Fishermen's Trail (Almograve–Zambujeira is a classic)
  • Arrifana and Bordeira, the theatres of Portuguese surf
  • Cape St Vincent at sunset, after the Sagres fortress

Our tips on the ground

  • The ocean is powerful: swim at lifeguarded beaches in season and respect the flags absolutely — rip currents give no warning.
  • In a van, use the campsites and official areas: wild overnighting is fined throughout the natural park.
  • The north wind (nortada) blows hard on summer afternoons: beaches in the morning, trail or villages after.

Readers' questions about Vicentine Coast

Vicentine Coast or classic Algarve?

It depends what you seek: the Vicentine for wildness, vans and surf; the southern Algarve for calm water, caves and family infrastructure. The ideal itinerary chains them: down the west coast, the turn at Sagres, a gentle climb along the south — the contrast is the trip's salt.

Can you walk the Fishermen's Trail without being a hiker?

Yes: the trail is enjoyed in 2-4 hour sections open to any properly shod walker, with entries and exits at each village. The sand makes some stretches more physical than they look: water, a hat, and in summer local shuttles allow half-legs.
