When to go
April-June and September-October are perfect everywhere: gentle heat, moderate crowds, a swimmable ocean by late summer. July-August concentrates crowds and prices in the Algarve — the inland Alentejo passes 35 °C. Winter stays mild and luminous on the coasts: Portugal's best off-season secret.
What it costs
Western Europe's gentlest: a car €20-35/day, guesthouses and quintas €55-100, a full meal €12-20, moderate motorway tolls. Budget €1,500-2,800 for two over 10 days excluding travel — less still off-season.
Driving & transport
Right-hand driving, no surprises. Three specifics: barrier-free electronic tolls (activate the Via Verde transponder with the rental firm), caution on the interior's back roads (optimistic local overtaking), and historic centres with lanes calibrated for donkeys — park at the village gates, never inside.

Two great itineraries share the favours: the descent Lisbon → Alentejo → Vicentine Coast → Algarve (one week, ocean and white villages), and the northern loop Porto → Douro valley → historic villages (4-5 days, vineyards and granite). The two combine into a complete 12-15 day tour.
