SIM Card and Internet in Iceland: Staying Connected on the Ring Road, and Knowing Where You Won't Be

In Iceland, the question "do I need a local SIM card?" is often settled before takeoff: the country belongs to the European Economic Area, and most European mobile plans already work there exactly as they do at home. The real issue comes later, once Route 1 gives way to an F-road in the highlands or a remote fjord in the Westfjords: there, no carrier gets a signal, whatever plan you're on. Here's how to set yourself up for the paved part of the trip — roaming, SIM card or eSIM, carrier, how much data — and how to plan for the moment the network cuts out completely, which happens more often than most travelers expect on a full loop of the island.
Good news: Iceland is already covered by "roam like at home"
Contrary to a common assumption — since Iceland isn't an EU member, many travelers expect standard roaming charges — the country is part of the European Economic Area, alongside Norway and Liechtenstein, and applies the same "roam like at home" rules as any EU member state. A French, Belgian or other EU-based mobile plan keeps working in Iceland at domestic rates and data allowances, with no surcharge, no setup, and no SIM to swap. This rule, extended by the European Commission through 2032, applies to Iceland automatically by virtue of its EEA membership.
Two caveats are still worth checking: budget or prepaid low-cost plans sometimes cap the data usable abroad under a "fair use" policy, well below the domestic allowance; and plans from outside the EU — a UK or Swiss contract, for instance — aren't covered by this rule and will bill Iceland as an out-of-zone destination. A quick call or message to your carrier before leaving settles the question.
Síminn, Vodafone, Nova: if a local SIM is still worth it
For travelers whose plan doesn't cover Iceland, or who'd rather keep their personal number idle, three carriers share the Icelandic market. Síminn, the incumbent, has the widest network outside Reykjavík and the main towns — a criterion that matters more for a road trip than urban coverage alone, which is solid across all three. Vodafone Iceland offers strong 4G, particularly in the south and around the capital, with prepaid plans starting around 1,790 ISK ($13) for 3GB. Nova, finally, runs the best 5G network and the lowest prices per gigabyte — from 2GB for 2,190 ISK ($16) up to 100GB for 3,990 ISK ($29) — but with rural coverage a notch below the other two.
For a full Ring Road loop, Síminn remains the safest single choice; Nova appeals for its price-per-gigabyte if your trip stays mostly urban or coastal. Prepaid SIM cards are sold at Keflavík airport, in supermarkets (Bónus, Krónan), N1 gas stations, and carrier shops in Reykjavík — registration usually requires an ID.
eSIM before departure: the option that leaves nothing to chance
For those who'd rather sort everything out before landing, a tourist eSIM activates in minutes through a dedicated app (Airalo, Saily, Nomad, Ubigi, among others) and gives you internet the moment you step off the plane, no counter queue required. Prices start around $4 per gigabyte for small plans and drop noticeably for larger ones — up to 50GB over 30 days for around $39 with some providers — though that's still a worse deal per gigabyte than a local SIM over a multi-week stay.
The eSIM's real value is practical: it covers the first hours of the trip — a last-minute booking, GPS out of the airport, a message home — while you take the time, once in town, to compare local plans if your European roaming allowance isn't enough.
Where the network is a non-issue: Route 1 and the main stops
Along the island's main loop — Route 1, or the Ring Road — 4G coverage is good to very good over almost the entire route: Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, the south coast down to Jökulsárlón, Lake Mývatn, Akureyri and Egilsstaðir all stay connected continuously across all three carriers. The same holds for the main paved secondary roads serving the Snæfellsnes and Reykjanes peninsulas.
A few quieter pockets still exist on isolated stretches of the Eastfjords or the remote Westfjords, where terrain briefly cuts the signal for a few kilometers — nothing, however, compared to the total void of the highlands.
The F-roads and the highlands: the real dead zone
The moment you leave paved roads for an F-road, everything changes. The Kjölur (F35) and Sprengisandur (F26), the two great highland crossings, each stretch over 150 to 200 km with no network and no services of any kind; Landmannalaugar and the Askja area share the same total absence of coverage. This isn't a one-off infrastructure gap — Iceland's highlands are, by definition, uninhabited and outside any served area.
