Lake Natron in Tanzania: flamingos, hiking and access

Published 29 July 2026 · updated 29 July 2026 · 8 min read

At the foot of the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, right on the Kenyan border, Lake Natron spreads its red-orange waters across an almost lunar landscape. This soda lake, one of the most alkaline in Africa, remains an off-the-beaten-track site in northern Tanzania, away from the Serengeti crowds. People come for the largest breeding colony of lesser flamingos in East Africa, for the refreshing Ngare Sero gorges and, for the more adventurous, for the night-time ascent of the region's only active volcano. Extreme heat, caustic water, demanding tracks: this guide details where Lake Natron is, how to get there and what you can actually do on site.

Where Lake Natron is located

Lake Natron sits in a depression of the Great Rift Valley, in northern Tanzania, right up against the border with Kenya. It stretches around sixty kilometres in length, overlooked to the south by the conical silhouette of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai's "mountain of God". It is an endorheic lake, with no outflow: the water evaporates under a crushing heat, concentrating the soda salts (sodium carbonate) that give the surface its characteristic red and pink hues.

This geography explains the site's isolation. Far from the main routes of the northern circuit, Lake Natron has to be earned: the landscape is mineral, almost desert-like, dotted with Maasai villages and springs flowing down from the Rift escarpment. It is usually visited on the fringes of a Serengeti-Ngorongoro itinerary, as a distinct stop, rawer and more intimate than the classic parks.

How to get there: tracks and 4x4

Access is almost always by road from the Arusha region, passing through Mto wa Mbu and Lake Manyara. Beyond that, the track becomes rough, dusty and sometimes torn up by the rains: a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, and most visitors go through an agency or a local guide. On site, access to certain places (waterfalls, lakeshore) is done in the company of a Maasai guide from the village, often required and valuable in any case.

The table below gives a rough idea of the distances and travel times from the usual departure points. Durations vary a great deal depending on the state of the track and the season; always check conditions locally before setting off, and carry plenty of water and fuel.

Flamingos and the lesser flamingo colony

Lake Natron is world-famous for its flamingos. This is where most of East Africa's lesser flamingos breed: the caustic water and the soda islets keep predators at bay, offering a nesting site of exceptional rarity. A remote-sensing study conducted by Tebbs and colleagues, published in 2013, on the lake's hydrological variability underlines precisely this role as an almost unique breeding site for East Africa's lesser flamingos, and the vulnerability of this balance in the face of water-level changes (see the study on Google Scholar: scholar.google.com/scholar?q=Tebbs+remote+sensing+hydrological+variability+Lake+Natron+Lesser+Flamingo+breeding ).

For the visitor, this imposes a simple rule: keep your distance. Flamingos are sensitive to disturbance, and a frightened colony may abandon its nesting. The birds are watched from the shore, with binoculars or a telephoto lens, without approaching the breeding areas. Respecting that distance means protecting a site on which an entire species depends at the regional scale.

Hiking: Ngare Sero gorges and Ol Doinyo Lengai

Beyond the lake itself, the region offers two flagship hikes. The more accessible one leads to the Ngare Sero gorges, where a walk in a riverbed leads to a series of waterfalls and pools. It is a cool, shaded escape, welcome after the furnace of the lake, doable in a few hours with a local guide. The second, far more demanding, is the ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai.

The volcano is climbed at night, to reach the summit at daybreak and avoid the heat: a steep, long and physical walk, to be reserved for well-trained hikers. The table below summarises the main activities, their duration and their difficulty to help you plan your stay.

Flamingo watching (shore)1 to 2 hEasy
Ngare Sero gorges and waterfalls2 to 4 hModerate

Heat, alkaline water and safety

Lake Natron is among the hottest and most hostile places in northern Tanzania. Temperatures can climb very high during the day, and shade is scarce. A hat, sun protection and large water reserves are not optional. The rhythm follows the sun: activities early in the morning or late in the day, rest during the hottest hours.

The lake water is strongly alkaline, caustic to the skin and eyes: you do not bathe in it, and you avoid any prolonged contact. It is this very chemistry that makes the site so photogenic and so vital for the flamingos. Swimming and coolness are found instead in the Ngare Sero pools. Finally, take care on the tracks and volcanic slopes: an experienced guide makes all the difference.

Best time to go and fitting it into the northern circuit

The dry season, roughly from June to October, offers the most passable tracks and more reliable access to the lake. The rainy periods can make some sections impassable and isolate the site. For flamingo watching, ask locally about the state of the colony, which varies with the water level and the seasons — a factor that Tebbs's study links directly to the lake's hydrology.

Lake Natron combines naturally with the classic northern circuit: Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater and Lake Manyara. Planned as a separate, wilder stop, it brings a strong contrast with the big-game parks. Two to three days are enough to grasp the essentials, between bird watching, the Ngare Sero gorges and, for the most motivated, Ol Doinyo Lengai.

Before you go

Readers' questions

Can you swim in Lake Natron?

No. The lake water is strongly alkaline and caustic to the skin and eyes: swimming is not advised. To cool off, head instead to the pools of the Ngare Sero gorges.

Do you need a 4x4 to reach Lake Natron?

It is strongly recommended. Beyond Mto wa Mbu, the track is degraded and sometimes difficult depending on the season. Most visitors go through an agency or a local guide with a suitable vehicle.

Can you approach the flamingos closely?

No. Lesser flamingos are very sensitive to disturbance and a frightened colony may abandon its nesting. They are observed from a distance, from the shore, with binoculars or a telephoto lens.

What is the best time to visit?

The dry season, roughly from June to October, offers the most passable tracks. The rains can make some sections difficult. Ask locally about the state of the flamingo colony before setting off.
