Driving on Sand in Namibia: Tyre Deflation and 4x4 Technique to Avoid Getting Stuck

Namibia's gravel tracks have their own risks, but sand brings different, more sudden ones: a patch of loose sand that appears without warning, a 4x4 that loses all grip in a split second, wheels spinning and digging in instead of moving forward. Unlike speed management on gravel, this risk isn't solved by slowing down — it's solved by changing technique, starting with tyre pressure. Here's how to handle Namibia's sandy stretches without spending the afternoon digging.

Where sand actually becomes an issue on the Namibian route

The classic Namibian circuit alternates tar, packed gravel and patches of loose sand, and the latter aren't rare: the Kalahari tracks to the east, dry riverbed crossings (the well-known 'rivers') between Sesriem and the Namib, the more remote stretches of Kaokoland toward Epupa, and some secondary access roads around the Skeleton Coast and Sossusvlei. Even an itinerary that looks 'easy' on paper often crosses a few hundred metres of deep sand, usually where you least expect it — leaving a campsite, at the bottom of a shaded riverbed, or right after a bend that hides a change in ground conditions.

Both call for different driving habits, and mixing up the reflexes for one with the other is the most common mistake among self-drive travellers.

Tyre deflation: the pressures that make the difference

The single most effective — and most often skipped — move before entering a sandy stretch is deflating your tyres. Most reputable Namibian rental companies recommend running around 2.0 bar on tar, dropping to about 1.8 bar on gravel; in sand, the useful pressure drops further still, typically between 1.2 and 1.5 bar (roughly 18 to 22 psi) depending on the vehicle's weight and how deep the sand is. It isn't intuitive at first — a fully inflated tyre feels safer — but it rests on a simple physical principle: a less inflated tyre flattens more against the ground, which increases its contact area and spreads the vehicle's weight over a wider footprint instead of digging in like a blade.

This isn't just field folklore: a study by Rui He, Corina Sandu and Javier Osorio, published in 2019 in the Journal of Terramechanics, precisely measured how reducing tyre inflation pressure increases the tyre-soil contact area and improves traction on soft ground before the tyre starts to spin (study available on Google Scholar: scholar.google.com/scholar?q=He+Sandu+Osorio+systematic+tests+tire+tractive+performance+soft+soil+terramechanics). That's exactly the mechanical give you're exploiting by deflating ahead of a sand patch — and losing by keeping tar pressure.

A tyre deflator (often included, or available as an add-on, from 4x4 rental companies) lets you bring all four wheels to the same pressure in a few minutes, no guesswork involved. Failing that, a valve key works too, but takes more patience and regular checks with a gauge to avoid dropping below the safety threshold — an overly deflated tyre can pop off the rim in a sharper turn.

Driving technique: keep momentum, never brake hard

Once the pressure is adjusted, the driving itself relies on a principle that often runs against instinct: in sand, you keep steady revs and a constant pace, avoid sudden acceleration, and never brake sharply. Slowing down gradually before entering a spotted sand patch, then holding a steady speed through it without jerky inputs, lets the wheels roll over the sand rather than dig into it. A sharp brake or a sudden lift off the accelerator at the wrong moment is enough to lose the momentum needed to make it out the other side.

4x4 mode (4H, or 4L on deeper stretches or dune climbs) should be engaged before entering the sand, never once the wheels are already bogged down — many modern 4x4s won't even let you shift mode while moving. A second gear or an intermediate ratio, neither too low nor too high, avoids both stalling and wheelspin: it's often a matter of testing over the first hundred metres and adjusting to how the vehicle responds, rather than guessing upfront.

Finally, it's usually safer to follow existing tracks than to blaze your own trail through an unfamiliar sandy stretch: a well-worn path signals at least somewhat compacted ground, while a detour 'to avoid a bump' can lead straight into a softer patch than expected.

If the 4x4 gets stuck anyway: the recovery method

The reflex to avoid at all costs is to keep accelerating once the wheels have stopped moving: that only digs a deeper hole and sinks the chassis further. The standard method is to clear the sand built up in front of and behind each wheel with a shovel (usually included in the 4x4's kit), slide recovery boards (sand tracks or maxtrax, carried by most reputable rental companies) under the drive wheels, then pull away gently in first gear or 4L, with no sudden acceleration. Deflating a little further at this stage — down to around 1 bar for very short distances — can be enough to regain the grip needed to get out, provided you then drive at a crawl until reaching firmer ground.

The step people forget: re-inflating once back on tar

Driving on tar for any distance with tyres deflated for sand is just as risky as the reverse: insufficient pressure overheats the tyre through excessive sidewall flex, with a real risk of a blowout at road speed. The rule is simple and non-negotiable: as soon as you're back on hard, sealed ground for any significant distance, re-inflate to tar pressure before picking up speed again. A 12V compressor, usually supplied with the 4x4 or available as an add-on, does the job in a few minutes at any campsite or petrol station.

What insurance covers — or doesn't — if you get stuck

Simply getting stuck in sand, with no damage to the vehicle, generally isn't an insurable event: it's a delay, not an accident. But the damage that sometimes follows — an undercarriage torn open forcing over a rock hidden under the sand, a tyre damaged from driving too long under-inflated, or a mechanical failure caused by an overly forceful recovery attempt — can be excluded or handled differently depending on the excess terms.
